Getting on the Same Page: Reporting
I’ve seen it time and time again: The strategic individual becomes frustrated not getting the information they want, while the tactical one ends up confused or (worse) feeling unappreciated.
Most often, this is simply the result of two different mindsets -- two different ways of thinking and communicating. Neither is right or wrong, but it’s essential to address this common situation, which can negatively impact your business.
Fortunately, there’s an easy fix, or at least a way to bridge the gap between strategic and tactical mindsets: more aligned reporting.
Taking a step back, the strategic individual typically wants high-level information and progress updates toward broader milestones and goals. The tactical individual wants more detailed information, for example, who is doing what and when.
When the request for information (or reporting) isn’t clear, or it’s assumed, there’s a gap. Strategic expects one thing, tactical another. Both sides need to become comfortable asking specifically for the information they need, and then agreeing on it. Sharing the “why” certain information is requested to be reported on can help educate each other on your thinking and communication style.
When this occurs, you can now hold yourselves accountable for the information delivered, but more importantly, continue working together with a shared understanding.
It sounds simple, and to a large extent it is, but you’d be surprised at how prevalent an issue this is within organizations.
Maybe you’ve experienced this yourself? How do you address this issue? Let’s share thoughts and ideas in the comments.
